Department of Emergency Medicine



Emergency Medicine Department provides emergency services for patients, based on triage criteria with comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach, 24 hours per day, by emphasizing on teamwork in managing emergency patients.

  • Pre-Hospital Care
Emergency treatment services provided for patients outside of UMMC by a medical team comprises of Assistant Medical Officer, Medical Treatment Assistant, and a driver by ambulance. For birth delivery and labor cases, the medical team will also be accompanied by a Medical Officer.
  • Emergency Treatment Services
Emergency treatment services includes several procedures and treatment areas:
  1. Triaging Process is at which patients are screened beforehand to screen the health condition and treatment is given based on priority. The Triaging Process is divided into Primary Triage and Secondary Triage.
  2. Resuscitation Hall is an area where critical patients (Triage 1) are placed to enable resuscitation and stabilizing patients' condition.
  3. Acute Treatment Hall is an area where semi-critical patients such as asthmatic and trolley patients are given treatment.
  4. Consultation Hall is an area for the treatment of emergency cases.
  5. Paediatric Emergency is a treatment area for kids below the age of 12 years old.
  6. Trauma and Emergency Ward is treated as an observation ward, continuation treatment and investigation for 24 hours before patients are admitted to normal wards or allowed to go home.
  • Trauma Operation Theatre
An area for emergency operation and emergency endoscopy. The operation theatre is operating 24 hours per day.
  • One Stop Crisis Centre (OSCC)
The centre coordinates between departments or other agencies in handling rape cases, child abuse, and domestic violence.
