Introduction
Department of Orthopaedics Surgery has played an integral part in patients’ care since the establishment of University Malaya Medical Center (formerly known as University Hospital) in 1967. The hospital was built to complement formal education and research by the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya and the department has maintained its importance and relevance until today. Over the last 50 years the management of musculoskeletal diseases in the hospital has naturally evolved from predominantly managing acute conditions in fractures and infections to “repair and reconstruct” in maximizing quality of life. As the nation becomes more developed, the focus of treatment has shifted from keeping a patient alive to improving his day-to-day function.
The era of a general orthopaedic surgeon is slowly fading as treatments of musculoskeletal diseases are becoming more complex and demanding. There are nine subspecialties in the department whose members are regarded as pioneers in the field and have trained many local and international orthopaedic surgeons. Apart from providing service by each subspecialized unit, we have been actively involved in multi disciplinary services such as Fracture Liaison Service, Foot Care Clinic, Return-To-Play Clinic and Sarcoma Board Meeting.
The recognition of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in the region and worldwide has been proven year in and year out through its publications, which contributed to the good standing of Universiti Malaya in the QS World University Ranking. This is made possible through the establishment of our National Orthopaedic Center of Excellence for Research and Learning (NOCERAL) with the support of Yayasan Ortopedik.
NOCERAL is currently housing a bone bank, eight laboratories and a library, which provide the platform for postgraduate research activities that are spearheaded by the Tissue Engineering Group (TEG). These research projects have helped many Ph.D and masters students to graduate and produce Platelet-Derived Extracellular Vesicle (P-EV) as a form of treatment for various musculoskeletal conditions. Publications derived from the works of TEG and Spine Research Unit – another publication engine of the department – have made Orthopaedic Surgery one of the top contributors for publications under the Faculty of Medicine.
NOCERAL is also equipped with 3D modeling and printing facility that is heavily used in the treatment of patients undergoing complex joint reconstruction or replacement. Together with bio-mechanic testing lab, we are one of a few centers that has the ability to perform an in-house load testing projects. Moreover, with the facilities that we have, various workshops and mini courses are carried out all year round: Microsurgery Course, Ponseti and Hip Spica Workshop, and Ilizarov/Taylor Spatial Frame Workshop. These workshops are attended by orthopaedic surgeons and trainees from around the country and also abroad.

Services
Orthopaedic care shall include consultation, diagnosis, treatment, counseling, prevention and rehabilitation.
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery shall provide the following clinical services:

3. Day Care Surgery
Provide day care facilities for the performance of minor procedures such as wrist arthroscopy, wound debridement, tendon adhesiolysis, removal of implant and excision of ganglion.
4. Subspecialty Services
Trauma
Provides management of patient with musculoskeletal injury other than spine and hand injury as it shall be handled by spine and hand teams respectively.
Spine Surgery and Rehabilitation
Provides management of patient with spine problems includes acute trauma to various aetiology of spine disorders.
Hand and Microsurgery
Provides management of patient with hand problems and microsurgery related care.
Division of Joint Reconstruction (DJR)
Provides management of patient with primary or secondary diseases of the joints includes hip or knee replacement surgery.
Foot and Ankle
Provides management of patient with foot and ankle disorders.
Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction (LLRS)
Provides management of patient with limb disorders referred for limb lengthening and reconstructive procedures
Orthopaedic Oncology
Provides management of patient with orthopaedic oncology diseases.
Paediatric Orthopaedic
Management of patients (prior to skeletal maturity) with trauma and diseases involving the musculoskeletal system in collaboration with Spine, Oncology, Hand and Microsurgery teams respectively.
Sports Injury
Provides management of patients with sport-related injury (patients shall be managed by Department of Orthopaedic Surgery or Sports Medicine Unit upon agreement between both parties).
