Master of Public Health (Occupational Health)

The Master of Public Health specialising in Occupational Health (MPH(Occupational Health)) programme is a continuation from the one-year general Master of Public Health (MPH) programme. The programme was started in 1998, and up until June 2006 there are eleven MPH(Occupational Health) specialist that have graduated.

Objective:

The Occupational Health (OH) physician uniquely interacts with patients, employees, employers, labour unions, attorneys, financier, and others in the community on issues relating to workers, the workplace, and the environment. The attitudes, behaviours and image of the OH physician must reflect and uphold the ethics, standards, and competencies of the specialty.

At the end of this course, the candidate will be knowledgeable/ competent in the following:

  1. The history, development and philosophy of Occupational Health
  2. Aetiological agents (physical, chemical, mechanical, biological and psycho-social)
  3. Biological monitoring and biological effect monitoring
  4. Environmental monitoring
  5. Medical surveillance and health surveillance
  6. Occupational Exposure Standards
  7. Occupational diseases, historical and recently-described conditions
  8. Differential diagnosis of acute and chronic occupational disorders
  9. Distinctions between occupational and non-occupational disorders
  10. Occupational Health Services

Duration:

The duration for this course is 36 months. The academic year for the Masters of Public Health programme starts in June.

The course is divided into to two stages;

  1. Stage II*: In-house Instruction (12 months)
  2. Stage III: Field Attachment & research (24 months)

*Stage I is the first year general MPH programme

Entry Requirement:

The entry requirement for this program is that the student must have successfully completed the one year general Master of Public Health programme of the University or other programme recognised by the Senate.

Assessment

Successfull completion of the continous assessments and the written Part 1 Examination at the end of the first 12 months. No candidate shall be permitted to sit for the Part 1 Examination unlsee he/she has submitted his/her attachment report(s) and a satisfactory research proposal not less than one month before the Part 1 examination. Candicate who have successfully passed the Part 1 examination will be allowed to proceed to the next stage; i.e. Field Attachment and Research.

Candidates who have successfull completed the attachment postings and continous assessments (assignments and logbooks), and the completed the research report, which must be submitted by the date stipulated (Not less than one month before the final examination) will be allow to sit for the Final examination, which consists of assessment of the research report and viva voce.

On successfull completion of the Part 1 and Final examination the candidate will be awarded the degree of Master of Public Health (Occupational Health).
