Department of Paediatrics

This department manages a total of 6 children wards and a Paediatric Day Care Ward. The objective of the department is to be an excellent body in handling all level of children care ranging from newborn up to 18 years old teen. This is to ensure all children in this region specifically in Malaysia would experience the best quality of care.

The mission of the department are as follows:

  • To achieve high work quality and to prepare competent specialists in child health field.
  • The department involves in preparing the faculty teaching program for students and is ensuring the program to always be up-to-date and satisfying the standard requirements.
  • The department is responsible in contributing and sharing expertise and informative knowledge with various parties through workshops and symposiums conducted from time to time. 

The department is divided into several units:

  • Gastroenterology and Herpetology Unit
-This unit provides treatment to child patients suffering intestinal, liver and nutritional problems. Procedures performed are gastrocopy, colonoscopy, liver biopsy, variceal banding, sclerotherapy, variceal and colonic polypectomy.

  • Haematology / Oncolgy Unit
-This unit receives referral cases and provides treatment to cancer and haematology children.Among the services offered are; diagnosis and radiotherapy treatment, day care service for chemotherapy, blood and bone marrow examination, manage transfusion day care centre for thalasemia illness, centre for haemopoietic stem cell for autologous and allogenic bone marrow transplant, peripheral blood stem cell and umbilical cord centre for illnesses such as cancer, haematology, metabollic and congenital immunodeficiency in children.
-Quantitative Analysis for Chiimerism analysis in stem cell transplant cases.
-Introduction to Double Cord Transplantation method whereby 2 units of healthy umbilical cord blood is given to cancer patients who are facing a high risk of recurrence.

  • Respiratory Unit
-This unit is responsible in providing treatment to child patients with respiratory illnesses and advance services to paediatric patients with chronic respiratory disease. The unit also provides tertiary service to child specialists in Malaysia who need Respiratory Medicine expert services.

  • Child Infectious Disease Unit
-This unit provides services to infected and low immunity patients needing further or special treatment whereby such service or specialty cannot be provided by other paediatric consultant specialist. Among the treatment are clinical immunology and immunisation, follow-up clinical treatment for contagious diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis and special medical clinic for low immunity patients.

  • Paediatric Community Unit
-This unit provides diagnosis, evaluation, and management services to children suffering from growth, weakness, learning and social disabilities such as child abuse victims or at risk of being abused, abandoned children or children facing problems or in dangerous situations. The assistance provided includes therapy, placement at school or looking for suitable social assistance.

  • Cardiology Unit
-This unit receives all child heart patient referral cases including teenagers and adults suffering congenital heart diseases. The services provided includes echocardiogram, stress echocardiogram and heart cathetarian.

  • Genetic and Metabolism Unit
-The unit serves as referral centre for genetic related diseases and provides genetic counselling services, clinical diagnostic, management and patient treatment in genetic medicine, metabolic and dysmorphology in UMMC and generally Malaysia. This unit is also responsible in enhancing genetic medicine among medical students and allied health science, paediatric housemen and sharing knowledge to public with regards to genetic related diseases.

  • Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes
-The unit serves as referral centre for children with hormonal diseases and diabetes. This unit also provides clinical diagnostic services, management, teaching and treatment related to the diseases. It is also responsible in improving paediatric endocrinology teaching standards among housemen and allied health science staff, paediatric masters student and public with regards to hormonal diseases and diabetes. 

  • Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
-This unit provides intensive care for critically ill infants, needing intensive treatment with full attention and monitoring. The unit also conduct researches, pre and post degree teaching followed by specialising training in Paediatric Intensive Care area.
